Pontiac — GM's performance division.

Pontiac was General Motors' performance and image brand from the late 1950s through 2010. The division's willingness to bend corporate rules produced the GTO — the first true muscle car — and a run of Firebird Trans Ams that defined the '70s.

Pontiac history

Pontiac's Wide Track era, its 421 Super Duty racing program, and John DeLorean's 1964 GTO gambit built the brand's performance credibility. The Firebird Trans Am carried the torch through 1979's SE 'Bandit' Trans Am and into the LS-powered fourth generation.

Pontiac buying guide

  • Pontiac VIN and PHS documentation is the industry standard — always demand it.
  • Real GTO, Trans Am SD-455, and Judge cars must match PHS records or values collapse.
  • Inspect body mounts, floor pans, and rear frame horns on all F-body Firebirds.

Selling a Pontiac on GM Vault

  • Order and include a fresh PHS report — it materially raises bid ceilings.
  • Photograph the data plate on the cowl and the block partial VIN.
